I have been asked recently by a couple of people what I think about Robert E Grant’s idea that A should be not 432 Hz, but 432.081216 Hz!
Here is my rebuttal to Robert Edward Grant’s precise temperament tuning, as he explains in a video which now seems to be taken down, so here is another video about it:
This “precise temperament” seems confused. Harmonics emanate from a base vibration in whole number intervals. A vibrating guitar string touched at a 5th of its length creates a harmonic tone which vibrates 5 times faster than the original. We call that the “major third” because it is the 3rd note in the european scale above the original – do, re, MI
This is where Pythagoras and those before him explored the Music Of The Spheres – because the frequency of a heavenly body, like the daily rotation of the Earth, would also have a 5th harmonic, and a 3rd harmonic, and a 9th, 13th. In fact, harmonics are created from all resonating bodies at all whole number multiples of the original:
The 2nd harmonic is a doubling of the frequency (the same note but an”octave” higher in pitch.
And the 3rd harmonic is the next most resonant. It gives us the fifth note in a scale, eg, do re mi fa SO.
The 4th harmonic is a doubling of the 2nd harmonic, another octave.
And the next strongest is the 5th harmonic which happens to give us the 3rd note in the harmonic scale – do re MI. Commonly referred to as the “major 3rd”.
So the “major third” vibrates 5 times faster than the original tone. And also 10 times, 2.5 times, and 1.25 times. Just different octaves of the same 5th harmonic note.
Robert Grant is deviating from harmonic realities when he says the multiplier for the “major-3rd” is 1.26. Because as we have seen above, it is 5, or 10,or 2.5, or 1.25. But not 1.26.
The way that strings vibrate, and flutes work, and electromagnetic resonances propagate is not defined by the page number of Leonardo Da Vinci’s manuscript. The Earth and the entire Cosmos follow the simple rule of whole number harmonic propagation.
Robert Grant is introducing a new kind of distortion (called a temperament) which once again removes humanity from the simple harmonic vibrations which all other species on this planet enjoy.
432 Hz is in fact a whole-number harmonic of a Day: the Earth rotates every 86,400 seconds, and creates measurable electomagnetic resonances at various whole number intervals of a day: 9.6 Hz is one. So is 7.2 Hz, 5.4 Hz and 10.8 Hz. 432 hz is in fact the 5th harmonic of that 10.8 Hz vibration. Precisely. Not 432 point anything. Precisely 432 vibrations per second. That is how the World is made. Some other points: “Geometry” actually means measuring the Earth. And regarding the commonly held notion that the sum of the angles of the pythagorean solids indicates F# 360 Hz and C# 540 Hz: well, the Second was not invented until watches were made in the 17th century.. When the number of degrees in a circle was determined to be 360 by the ancient Hebrews and Babylonians, the unit of time was the Helek. There are 18 heleks to the Minute, each Helek is 3.33333 recurring of today’s seconds. So, if the angles of pythagorean solids have a connection to vibration, for the people who worked out the metrology of both rotation and time it would be 540 vibrations per Helek, which is 540/3.3333 seconds = 162 vibrations per second, a harmonic E note, as it happens, not C#. And 360/3.333333 seconds = 108 vibrations per second. And two octaves above, 108 hz x 4 = 432 Hz precisely! That is an A, not an F#.
Thank you Robert Grant for all that you are trying to do, but distortions in your argument are misleading the People towards a musical scale that is out of harmony with Nature. We can do better.
You can check by ear how Robert Edward Grant work sounds just better than the pythagorean comma, that would be in what you are writing “Pythagorean distortion”.
The point is though, that Nature sustains a resonance of harmonics around us at all times on this planet. So, it’s not just about creating a scale that sounds in-tune with itself, it’s about comprising that scale of frequencies where each tone is in-tune with that background radiation of sound, all derived from the rotational resonance of an Earth Day. If we lived only in an artificial world created by our intellects, a tempered scale might be the answer. But that’s why Voltaire and the people of the Age Of Reason were wrong, because there is a divine intelligence behind the fractal, harmonic, conscious interconnection of energy, and our musical scale needs to be a part of that, in the same way that the birds and the earth’s electro-magnetic field are part of that resonance. Live in harmony with nature, is the message. Not try to be smarter than Nature.
Perhaps this debate can be settled in a way that satisfies both sides: I agree, it seems obvious that the best musical scale, in relation to its effect upon the well-being of all living beings upon earth, is the one that is most harmonious to the natural rhythms of the Mother Earth herself. Sound as this logic may be, and I posit even further, TRUE as this may be, it is not the full story. For instance, you refer to a divine intelligence behind ‘…conscious interconnection of energy,’ of which our musical scale needs to be a part. If you agree that a divine intelligence’s scope of existence does both include and yet far exceed that of earth’s, and that earth is a microcosm of the macro-cosmos, then perhaps we can consider the possibility that this realm of intelligence may be more directly involved in the culmination of this newly suggested musical scale than you have previously considered. In the interest of your more informed consideration, I invite you to look into what Robert Grant has to say about the sequence of events that occurred behind his bringing this new scale to humanity. I am assured that you will no longer assume he is trying to be smarter than nature, unless you mean that the human being is part of nature and he, by his conscious interconnection with divine intelligence, is succeeding at upgrading humanity’s consciousness. I will suggest also for your further considerations the possibility that earth’s rhythms may include cycles that are outside that which our current scientific instruments have the ability to measure or even detect…..well, all except the right instrumentation of consciousness. So the mainstream person who has not looked past mainstream modern information is unable to observe any evidence of such a planetary cycle as such. Planetary cycles, regarding their interrelation to the solar system and the cosmos, are not an unfamiliar topic to all of humanity’s ancient cultures and much knowledge can be gained by such investigation if one so chooses. You might very well find that humanity is indeed experiencing a brief transitional period which consists of a portion of humanity’s shift into a raised consciousness while others remain unable to avail themselves to the opportunity. Anyway, I wrote this because it seemed to me that you are likely the smart person you appear to be, so in the event that you are of the kind of smart person who utilizes having new valid information to take into consideration, if figured you may appreciate it.
